On 8th November, the Emiliyan Stanev secondary school (Bulgaria) hosted a lively celebration of the European Day of Healthy Food and Cooking, involving students and teachers in an event that emphasised the importance of healthy and safe food.

The day was an opportunity to explore the culinary traditions of various countries, such as Bulgaria, Turkey, France, Spain and Russia, through the preparation and tasting of traditional dishes.

The Emiliyan Stanev school is part of the European Values and Migration project (EUAMI) whose aim is to promote European values, including health and food safety as pillars of EU policies.

This initiative highlights one of the central themes of European Union policies: food safety. Ensuring that the food consumed by citizens is safe, healthy and of high quality is a top priority for the EU, which, through strict regulations and stringent controls, is committed to preventing health risks and promoting balanced eating habits.

Food safety is not only about individual health, but has a broader impact on society as a whole. A safe food system, indeed, reduces healthcare costs, prevents disease and contributes to consumer confidence in European products.

Events such as the one organised by the Bulgarian school offer an opportunity to raise young people’s awareness of the importance of a conscious and sustainable diet, while also stimulating intercultural dialogue.

In an increasingly interconnected global context, the EU also promotes a sustainable food supply chain, reducing waste and encouraging responsible agricultural practices. Through educational projects and thematic days, such as the European Day of healthy food and cooking, awareness is raised among the younger generation on the importance of choosing quality products and respecting the environment.

The celebration at the Emiliyan Stanev school is a concrete example of how food safety can be integrated into education, combining fun, culture and learning to build a healthier future for all European citizens.
